The following reflections of St. John Paul II indicate the crucial need for media education today:

Media offer unlimited opportunities for information, education, cultural expansion, spiritual growth which we never had before. Media have an enormous positive potential for promoting sound human and family values. May families find in the media a source of support, encouragement and inspiration as they strive to live a community of life and love, to train young in moral values and culture of solidarity, freedom and peace.

Yet, media have capacity to do grave harm to families by presenting inadequate or even deformed outlook on life, family, religion and on morality. Communication must have ethical criterion of respect for the truth and for the dignity of the human person. Traditional Family values, secularism need to be protected. Parents should teach media to children to be Moderate, critical, watchful and prudent use of the media in the home. They should discuss media problems. They also should express their opinions to producers, advertisers, public authorities what they like and dislike.

Mass Media continues to alter our values, belief systems, attitudes and behaviour through their well packed content and audio-visuals means.
Media has become so much part of life that many of us take an uncritical approach to its underlying messages.

Critical media literacy aims to engage people with media through critically examining representations, systems, structures, ideologies, and power dynamics that shape and reproduce culture and society. It is an inquiry-based process for analysing and creating media by interrogating the relationships between power and knowledge.

Critical media literacy is a dialogical process for social and environmental justice. It challenges media messages that reproduce oppression and discrimination. Critical media literacy celebrates positive representations and beneficial aspects of media while challenging problems and negative consequences, recognizing media are never neutral. Critical media literacy is a transformative pedagogy for developing and empowering critical, caring, nurturing, and conscientious people.

This programme is aimed at creating ‘Media Education Trainers’ who can:
• examine the ways media define our perceptions and shape our life experience
• make ‘media consumption’ an active and critical process
• make media accountable and responsible to society.

Objectives of the programme:

1. To understand the concepts of Media Education in practice (Media education, Media literacy and Educommunication)
2. To Build a strong network of Media education trainers in Asia
3. To get insights from the best practices of media education across the world
4. To generate teaching materials (videos and training manual) for the trainers.
   Expected results:
5. A clear understanding over the concepts of media education is achieved
6. An ‘Asian Media Education Trainers network’ is launched to support the efforts of ME activists across Asia.
7. A documentation of case studies (best practices) is produced to inspire ME practitioners across Asia
8. A group of 15 young Media education trainers created who can take up the training needs at various levels.
9. A set of Media education videos along with a training manual produced to support the trainers.

Selection of the participants for this programme:

1. SIGNIS Asian Country Presidents, Diocesan Media Commission Secretaries, Media professionals can recommend suitable candidates for this programme. He or She should be able to support SIGNIS Media Education programmes in their respective countries in future.
2. The training will be in English.
3. The candidate has to attend all sessions and submit the assignments required by the organisers to receive the International Trainer’s Certificate.
4. There will be a series of follow-up programmes and the participants are kindly requested to take part in them to hone up your training skills further.
5. Total number of participants is 15.
6. There is no course fee for this programme.
