Short documentary by the FA MULAN SIGNIS group from Nepal marks the 30th International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

To mark the 30th International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, the FA MULAN SIGNIS group from Nepal present a short documentary featuring the Tamang Community of Tipling in Nepal. The film highlights how the Taming people integrate their rich cultural traditions with their Catholic faith, focusing on indigenous practices such as hair-cutting rituals and salt inaugurations that illustrate their strong cultural identity and embrace of religious beliefs.

“The Convergence of Indigenous Tamang Tradition and Catholic Faith in Tipling” is a compelling short documentary that delves into the unique cultural synthesis occurring in Tipling.

It explores how the Tamang community harmoniously blends their ancient traditions with Catholic practices, creating a distinct and enriching spiritual tapestry. Through vivid imagery and insightful interviews, the film captures this fascinating cultural intersection, showcasing the resilience and adaptability of the Tamang people as they navigate their dual heritage.

The documentary features interviews with various members of the Tipling community, including youth, elders and parishioners, as well as insights from Fr Paul KC, parish priest of St Ignatius Church in Baniyatar and His Excellency Bishop Paul Simick. These perspectives offer a deeper understanding of how the Catholic Tamang community integrates their traditional practices with their faith.

World Indigenous Day is celebrated annually on August 9th. This year’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2024 is focusing on ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’. Established by the United Nations in 1994, it honours the cultural heritage, rights and contributions of indigenous peoples around the world. This day marks the anniversary of the first meeting of the first meeting of the UN working group on Indigenous Populations in 1982. It aims to celebrate the rich diversity of indigenous cultures, raise awareness about their rights and challenges, and express global solidarity.

Special thanks to @Sujan Patrick Ghale @Supriya Lama and @Bimal Tamang for their wonderful contribution and effort in making this short film a success.
